Cyprus - the
Island
Cyprus is a sun-drenched island with a
subtropical climate enjoying clear blue skies for most of the year.
It is situated in the eastern corner of the Mediterranean and is the
third largest of all the islands in the Mediterranean. It is the legendary birthplace
of Aphrodite the goddess of love and
beauty.
Cyprus is an island of contrasts with sandy
beaches and rugged coves along the coastline rising up to pine
forest covered mountains. The mountains offer cool shade in the
summer and at the highest point in Troodos snow covered slopes for
skiing in the winter.
Cyprus is steeped in history, over 9,000 years
old with many archaeological treasures.
The occupation by many
ancient civilisations including the Romans, Byzantines and Greeks
have all left their influence.
The local people are
friendly and will extend you a warm welcome. English is widely spoken
throughout the Island and there are a few aspects of life in
Cyprus that will remind
you of home. For example
driving on the left makes hiring a car so much easier and the
voltage is the same as the UK with even the same
3-pin plug used.
